Turtle Trade Channels (TuTCI) is a breakout trend-following indicator based on the classic Turtle Trading rules. It plots a 20-bar high/low channel for entries, a 10-bar channel for exits and a trend line, and marks Long Entry, Short Entry, Exit Long and Exit Short on the price chart. It works on any market and timeframe, and the entry and exit lengths are adjustable.

How the channels work

  1. Upper and Lower lines show the highest high and lowest low of the last 20 bars (Entry Length). They are Donchian channels.
  2. A Long Entry is marked when price breaks above the previous 20-bar high, and a Short Entry when it breaks below the previous 20-bar low. Only the first breakout after the last exit is marked.
  3. The Exit Line follows the 10-bar low during a long position and the 10-bar high during a short one (Exit Length). An Exit Long or Exit Short is marked when price touches it.
  4. The Trend Line is the lower channel after an upside breakout and the upper channel after a downside breakout, so it works as a trailing stop that only moves with the trend.
  5. The area between the channel and the Exit Line is shaded green while the long state is active and red while the short state is active.

Default settings

  • Entry Length: 20
  • Exit Length: 10
  • Show Entry/Exit Signals: on
  • Highlighter (green and red fill): on

How to use it

  • Trade in the direction of the last entry signal and use the Exit Line or Trend Line as the stop.
  • Use longer lengths (for example 55 and 20) on daily charts for slower, bigger trends; shorter lengths give more signals on intraday charts.
  • Combine breakouts with a higher-timeframe trend filter or volume to skip weak moves.
  • Create platform alerts on the Upper, Lower and Exit lines to be notified on a breakout.

Limitations

Breakout systems win on a few large trends and lose small amounts in ranges, so many false breakouts in sideways markets are normal. Signals appear on the bar where the level is broken, and a signal on the last bar can disappear if price returns before the bar closes.

About this version

Indie port for TakeProfit of the open-source Pine Script v4 indicator published on TradingView in March 2021. The logic follows the original: the entry and exit channels, trend line, exit line, signal rules and the background highlighter. All plotted lines and signals matched TradingView on the same candles. Differences: TradingView alertcondition() is replaced by platform alerts, and the signal label and circle are shown as separate markers. Last updated: October 2026.
