MA Position Score is a multi-horizon trend indicator that shows where price stands relative to four widely followed moving averages:
- 50-period SMA
- 100-period SMA
- 150-period SMA
- 200-period SMA
It combines the moving-average structure into a single directional score, an Agreement reading, and a seven-point trend category. The goal is to make the market's broader trend position readable at a glance while keeping the individual moving averages visible for context.
What You See
Moving-Average Lines
- Cyan — 50-period SMA: Fastest view of the current trend.
- Yellow — 100-period SMA: Short/intermediate trend reference.
- Orange — 150-period SMA: Intermediate/long trend reference.
- Magenta — 200-period SMA: Slowest structural trend reference.
Position Score Fill
The shaded area between the 50- and 200-period averages provides an immediate visual summary:
- Strong green: Strong positive trend position.
- Light green: Positive trend position.
- Faint purple: Neutral, mixed, or warming up.
- Light red: Negative trend position.
- Strong red: Strong negative trend position.
The fill is a trend-context cue. It is not a support zone, resistance zone, or price target.
Score Badge
The badge displays three readings:
Trend: Uptrend (6/7)Score: 42.7Agreement: 100%
- Trend is the current seven-point trend category.
- Score shows the direction and strength of price's overall position relative to the moving-average complex.
- Agreement shows how consistently the four horizons support the same direction.
Seven-Point Trend Scale
- Strong Downtrend (1/7): Strong negative position with broad horizon alignment.
- Downtrend (2/7): Established negative trend position.
- Weak Downtrend (3/7): Negative lean, but strength or alignment is limited.
- Neutral / Mixed (4/7): No clear multi-horizon trend, or the horizons conflict.
- Weak Uptrend (5/7): Positive lean, but strength or alignment is limited.
- Uptrend (6/7): Established positive trend position.
- Strong Uptrend (7/7): Strong positive position with broad horizon alignment.
The categories describe the current structure. They are not forecasts of the next price move.
Reading the Position Score
The Position Score runs from approximately -100 to +100:
- +68 to +100: Strong positive position.
- 0 to +68: Positive position.
- Near 0: Neutral, compressed, or internally mixed.
- -68 to 0: Negative position.
- -100 to -68: Strong negative position.
Useful changes to watch:
- Positive and rising: the positive trend position is strengthening.
- Positive and falling: the trend remains positive but is weakening.
- Crossing above zero: the overall structure has shifted positive.
- Oscillating near zero: the market is compressed, range-bound, or transitioning.
- Negative and falling: the negative trend position is strengthening.
- Negative and rising: the trend remains negative but is weakening.
- Crossing below zero: the overall structure has shifted negative.
Reading Agreement
Agreement ranges from 0% to 100%:
- 80% to 100%: High alignment across the four horizons.
- 50% to 80%: A clear lean with some internal disagreement.
- 20% to 50%: Mixed or transitional structure.
- 0% to 20%: Strong cancellation among the horizons.
High Agreement is not automatically bullish. A strong downtrend can also have 100% Agreement. Always read Agreement together with the score sign and trend category.
Agreement also does not guarantee continuation. It describes how coherent the current moving-average position is.
Quick Interpretation Cues
Strongest Bullish Context
- Trend reads
Strong Uptrend (7/7). - Score is strongly positive.
- Agreement is high.
- Price is above all four averages.
- The averages are rising and increasingly ordered
50 > 100 > 150 > 200.
Bullish but Still Developing
- Trend reads
Weak Uptrend (5/7) or Uptrend (6/7). - Score is positive.
- Agreement is low or moderate.
- Price is above some averages but still interacting with others.
Neutral or Transitional
- Trend reads
Neutral / Mixed (4/7). - Score is near zero, Agreement is very low, or both.
- Price is moving through a compressed or crossing moving-average structure.
Frequent category changes near neutral should be treated as uncertainty, not as a series of independent signals.
Bearish but Still Developing
- Trend reads
Weak Downtrend (3/7) or Downtrend (2/7). - Score is negative.
- Agreement is low or moderate.
- Price is below some averages but the full structure has not aligned.
Strongest Bearish Context
- Trend reads
Strong Downtrend (1/7). - Score is strongly negative.
- Agreement is high.
- Price is below all four averages.
- The averages are falling and increasingly ordered
50 < 100 < 150 < 200.
Important Timeframe Note
The moving-average lengths use chart bars:
- On a daily chart, they represent 50, 100, 150, and 200 trading days.
- On a one-hour chart, they represent 50, 100, 150, and 200 hourly bars.
- On a weekly chart, they represent 50, 100, 150, and 200 weekly bars.
Use the same timeframe when comparing readings across symbols.
Practical Use
MA Position Score is best used to answer:
How strong, directional, and internally aligned is price relative to its major moving-average structure?
Use it as trend context alongside price action, moving-average slope and ordering, support and resistance, liquidity, and risk management.
An extreme positive score is not automatically a sell signal, and an extreme negative score is not automatically a buy signal. The indicator categorizes the current trend structure; it does not determine valuation or predict the timing of a reversal.
