Abu Laith Swing Structure reads the swing structure of any chart and answers two questions at a glance: which way is the trend, and at what price is it proven wrong. It works on stocks, ETFs, crypto, forex and low-priced stocks, on any timeframe.

How it differs from a standard swing high/low or pivot indicator

  • Swing size is measured in volatility, not bars. A swing point is confirmed only after price reverses by a multiple of ATR (default 2x ATR 14). The same setting adapts to a $1 stock, Bitcoin or EUR/USD, with no need to tune “left/right bars” for each instrument.
  • It reads the structure for you. Every confirmed swing is labeled HH, HL, LH or LL, and a trend state (UP or DOWN) is kept from the sequence.
  • Trend invalidation line. A dashed line marks the exact price where the current trend fails: the last swing low in an uptrend, the last swing high in a downtrend. A candle closing through it flips the trend. It gives an objective reference for where the structure is broken, which is the natural area to place or review a stop.
  • Major vs. minor swings. Major swings require a larger reversal (default 5x ATR). The last 3 minor and last 2 major swing highs and lows can be drawn as horizontal levels (optional) that extend until a candle closes through them.

How it works

  1. While price makes new highs, the highest high is tracked. When price drops at least Swing Size x ATR from it, that high is confirmed as a swing high and the tracker switches to lows. The reverse confirms swing lows. Swings always alternate: high, low, high, low.
  2. A confirmed high above the previous swing high is HH, otherwise LH. A confirmed low above the previous swing low is HL, otherwise LL.
  3. Trend (default mode): a close below the last swing low sets DOWN, a close above the last swing high sets UP, and it holds until the opposite break. Strict mode requires HH + HL for UP and LH + LL for DOWN, and shows MIXED otherwise.
  4. The invalidation line follows the last swing low (uptrend) or last swing high (downtrend) and steps when a new swing is confirmed.

The default view is minimal: labels, trend tag and invalidation line. The swing line, minor and major levels, line types and colors are optional settings. Alert outputs: Trend (1 / -1), Invalidation Break (1 / -1), New Major Swing (1 / -1).

Limitations

  • Swing points are confirmed late by design: a swing high is known only after price has already reversed by the ATR multiple. Once confirmed, swing points and labels do not repaint.
  • The trend state, invalidation line and level breaks use the candle close. On the live candle they can change until the candle closes, so use alerts on candle close.
  • Break-of-structure trends can flip back and forth in sideways markets. A larger Swing Size or Strict mode reduces this, at the cost of later changes.
  • “Major” means a larger reversal happened at that point. It does not mean the level is more likely to hold.
  • This is a structure-reading tool, not a buy or sell signal. Entries, exits and position size remain the trader’s decision.
  • Defaults were set and tested on daily charts of stocks, crypto, forex and a sub-$2 stock. The logic is identical on other timeframes, but Swing Size may need adjusting.
